A floresta constitui cerca de 31% da superfície terrestre e é fundamental a nível económico, social e cultural, pelo facto de manter a biodiversidade da fauna, da flora e dos seus habitats, de assegurar a qualidade e a quantidade de água, de combater a erosão dos solos e a desertificação, de ser um reservatório de CO2, de criar e manter emprego e, principalmente, de fornecer fontes de energia (biomassa) como alternativas aos combustíveis fosseis.
A floresta está ameaçada por vários fatores que provocam a sua destruição, como a conversão dos solos para a agropecuária, incêndios florestais, a sobre-exploração de madeira, fragmentação devido à construção de estradas, à poluição atmosférica e alterações climáticas, introdução de novas espécies exóticas, expansão urbana e o incremento de áreas turísticas.
Devido à sua destruição, corre o risco de prejudicar não só o ambiente, na medida em que podemos verificar uma perda de biodiversidade e dos habitats de muitas espécies, o aumento da erosão dos solos que pode levar à desertificação, a diminuição da infiltração de agua no solo e, consequentemente, o aumento do efeito de estufa, mas também na sociedade onde podemos observar uma diminuição de atividades turísticas ligadas às florestas, uma diminuição do potencial farmacêutico, um aumento do desemprego nas industrias ligadas às florestas (mobiliário) e também uma diminuição do comércio internacional como, por exemplo, de cortiça e de papel.
Como vimos anteriormente, os prejuízos resultantes da destruição da floresta são grandes. Para que isso se inverta, devemos, não só, conservar e fiscalizar as florestas como também proteger e criar novas áreas de proteção ambiental.
Cuida da floresta evita o que não presta!
